Kickstarter Spotlight: Micromon

MICROMON KICKSTARTER SPOTLIGHT

Micromon Mobile Monsters, What is it?

A Poké-clone (and proud). Moga Interactive is aiming to create a free Pokémon-esque experience for smartphones featuring branching story arcs, a massive sandbox overworld and RPG-like questing elements.

The devs, Moga Interactive, promise a “vast overworld where you can search, battle and catch over 100 monsters including rare and epic ones” if they reach their target of $43,000 by June 15th. The epic scope of the game and the sheer balls required to take on the Pokémon franchise make Micromon a fitting project to feature as the first in our Kickstarter Spotlight series.

Why should you care?

What makes Micromon an interesting & exciting proposition is the integration of more advanced and modern gaming mechanics that, for whatever reason, have not been adopted by the most recent Pokémon games. Branching storylines and RPG-like questing set in a sandbox with over 100 monsters sounds like an absolute bonus. Moga Interactive have said that Micromon will offer a deeper experience than any monster capture game has offered before, with the story looking to explore more mature themes than fans of the genre have experienced in the past.

Smartphones lend themselves to the social aspect perfectly; everyone’s got one, they’re portable and they’re always online. With this in mind the social possibilities of a game of this scale dwarf even those of the Pokémon games. Obviously the potential of Micromon is huge. The installation base of the iOS platform alone is ridiculously large, couple that with the cross-platform possibilities with a possible Android version and this game could become a huge hit.

Obviously I’m looking at this Kickstarter project with great optimism. Realistically Moga Interactive have quite a task on their hand. Their main challenge will be to deliver a deep and engaging campaign mode with a well-balanced capturing system and multiplayer modes. The devs have taken tried and true mechanisms from many different games, both good and bad. The fact that the game will be free with items available to buy in-game via microtransactions does not buzz me in the slightest. Personally I’d rather pay a one-off fee, instead the game’s business model seems scarily similar to something Zynga would pump out.

To pledge or not?

For a Kickstarter project the proposed plan is very fleshed out and thorough. The devs make no bones about wanting to bring a Pokémon-like experience to smartphones, they just need our funding to create it. The guys at Moga have put a huge amount of work and resources in to this project already. As of the time of writing they have raised $1,436, not bad for a project that’s only been live for a few days.

Depending on the size of your pledge you could receive a Micromon wallpaper for your desktop ($5) or feature as an NPC in-game ($500) – check out the full list of available pledges here.
